New Opportunities through Material Process AdvancementsClientNatureWorks, LLC (Cargill Dow Polymers) ChallengeWith numerous products already commercialized, NatureWorks, LLC(R) was looking to expand the applicability of its standard PLA formulation. In order to develop other compelling offerings, NatureWorks, LLC(R) needed more cost effective methods of producing the PLA formulations with the desired characteristics. SolutionWorking with NatureWorks, LLC(R) to understand the specific cost and performance targets for each application, Aspen was able to modify the base PLA resin and designed processing methods to meet the desired performance targets. Over the next three years, several innovative process enhancements were developed through the partnership between Aspen and NatureWorks, LLC(R). The successful compounding of PLA with higher throughput and quality helped drive the economic decision to build a facility able to produce 300 million pounds of material annually. |
