Prioritizing Research & Patent EffortsClient SituationCannot disclose due to confidentiality agreement. ChallengeThe client had extensive research and existing patents in place to protect its know-how and products. As market trends and consumer needs evolved, management saw an opportunity for further product development and protection against competitive moves. Due to the costs associated with performing product research as well as preparing, filing and managing patents, the client wanted to focus their efforts on the most compelling opportunities that would require the minimum number of patents. SolutionAspen identified the attributes of the client's current and proposed products. Furthermore, it assessed patents filed by other companies to develop a plan for creating a "picket fence" to protect their freedom to operate. From this plan, the client was able to clearly see where they needed to focus their research and patenting efforts. With Aspen's support, the client was able to manage their investment in research more effectively. While other companies may have had an opportunity to conduct broad research and developed an extensive portfolio of patents to intimidate competitors, the project team identified a more nimble and cost-effective plan. This plan enabled the client to effectively focus their research efforts and helped them to protect their innovations without "breaking the bank". |
