ChallengeA leading coating material supplier to the automotive industry needed a second source of supplier that was able to meet unique processing requirements and could produce high quality coating materials quickly. The client's process was not easily reproducible and few suppliers had the required capability. Thermoset coating materials were made in batches through blender operations that required hand loading and measuring of components, resulting in inefficiencies and quality risks. SolutionAspen teamed with the client to produce the required coating materials to specification and designed an automated liquid injection technology that allowed adding components directly into the compounding process. This solution streamlined operations by eliminating the extra blending step and added consistency to the formulation. Leveraging Aspen's analytical capabilities, extensive testing was also performed to verify proper formulation, ensure absolute cleanliness in the process and eliminate any risk of off-color contamination. Aspen was able to produce the required product to the specified quality in just 6 week after initial contacts. The new process improved efficiency and the client changed their manufacturing process, resulting in significant processing cost savings while achieving desired product quality goals. |
