Challenge

A leading adhesives and coating company produced their product using a continuous compounding technology. Their customers complained they could not apply the client's product consistently and were converting their application lines to a competitor's product.

How could the product be made to eliminate the customer's complaints and stop the erosion of their market share?

Solution

Aspen looked at the entire production process and identified that the major contributor to customer complaints was the entrained gas in the packaged material. Aspen looked at the chemistry of the product and bulk properties to identify a solution. Aspen developed processing methods to reduce gas formed by reactions between impurities and raw materials. Aspen also designed and built a unique packaging system that filled the containers with minimal folding of the material, and managed the temperature of the material to reduce the amount that pulled away from the container walls as the material cooled.

The result was not only did the client regain the customers it had lost, it also quickly started to gain market share. The business continues to grow by double-digits every year and has expanded from being a North American product to being sold throughout Asia and Europe.
